Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:20 am, the temperature outside is 37.0 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 60’s. Tonight will be mostly clear with a low in the mid-40’s. Expect showers tomorrow afternoon with a high in the 60’s. Showers will continue overnight Saturday, then return again Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 35.6 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.19 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 54.0 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 143 cfs, 1.29 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 115 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 133 cfs, 1.09 feet, which compares to median flow of 185 cfs. The water temperature is 51.6 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 44.1 cfs, .61 feet, compared to median flow of 72 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 28.9 cfs, 2.15 feet, compared to median flow of 40 cfs. The water temperature is 46.9 degrees.
The water rose yesterday and it is falling quickly in most streams. Water temperatures are good in the lower elevations, and cool higher up.
I would choose a lower elevation stream to fish today. Flows are low again, so stealth and presentation are more important than fly selection. Don’t let the fish see you, don’t spook them, get a good drift, and you will catch more trout.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Fish the choppy water where most trout are hiding.
TVA and the Corps are generating at many of the dams today. If you go early, you should be able to fish on the Clinch River for a while, further downstream from the dam. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if and how you can work with their generation schedules.
There are aggressive bear activity warmings at several backcountry campsites. The Mt. LeConte backcountry shelter is closed due to aggressive bear activity. Bears are scavenging for food, to fatten up for the Winter months, when food is scarce.
You can read more about the problem bears on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Our neighbors, who live just a few hundred yards from our house are dealing with a pesky bear. They don’t leave food outside. This bear is just destroying things around their house, like a garden hose, window screens and other items.
For some reason, the bear is not bothering anything at our home. We are now keeping our vehicles locked at night. Bears have been entering cars and trucks causing damage lately. They can destroy the inside of a car or truck quickly.
My plan is to pressure wash concrete walks and curbs at the shop today. Paula bought a new Stihl pressure washer two weeks ago and I can’t leave that thing alone. I keep it and a Stihl blower in my truck. I blow off the parking lot at the shop every morning before opening time.
We have been buying Stihl power equipment from the Ace Hardware store in Townsend during the past few years. They have an excellent repair shop, run by David Hatcher. He is an top notch technician, and he turns around repairs and maintenance quickly, on any brand. Good small engine repair shops, that don’t have long wait times are rare these days. I highly recommend David.
I left two chain saws at a repair shop in Alcoa for two months, two years ago. They did not get the work done on them. So, I picked the saws up and took them somewhere else. At that shop, they told me the work would take a month. Then, I found David and his son. I got my saws back in two days.
We are busy at the store. October looks very good so far. The store is well stocked. We beefed up our wader and wading boot inventory which was a sizable investment. I’m sure that will pay off for everyone, you and us.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
