Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:15 am, the temperature outside is 60.3 degrees.
It was windy overnight and rain is falling now. So far, we have had .13 inches of rain in Townsend. The rain will continue until later this morning. Rainfall between a quarter of an inch and a half of an inch is possible. It may be windy this morning. It will be sunny later. The high today will be about 66 degrees. Tonight, the temperature will fall to around 40 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 62.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.36 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 76 cfs. The water temperature is 61.3 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 231 cfs, 1.53 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 146 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing normal at 201 cfs, 1.32 feet, which compares to median flow of 202 cfs. The water temperature is 58.8 degrees at the Birdtown gauge.
Tellico River has already begun to rise. Flow at the Tellico Plains gauge is 70.5 cfs, .80 feet, compared to median flow of 69 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing near normal at 34.9 cfs, 2.20 feet, compared to median flow of 42 cfs. The water temperature is 55.2 degrees.
It is hard to say what affect the rain will have on the streams today. The stream gauges are not showing increases in flow, except Tellico River. They may be rising soon.
I would keep an eye on the USGS gauges this morning before going. If the streams are rising quickly, they could be stained temporarily. And, some may be flowing high. But, maybe they won’t. The weather radar indicates a few spots of fairly heavy rain, especially in the Smoky Mountains, for a short period this morning. There may be more rain coming from the South later this morning.
Fishing is good. David E came by the shop yesterday afternoon. He had a good day fishing near Elkmont. Water temperatures are excellent in the low and mid elevations. Flows are very good, though that may change.
I would plan to go. Try nymphs or dry flies. Nymphs will probably work best.
Today’s rain is bringing drought relief to parts of Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, east Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and other states to our north.
There are opportunities to fish on a few tailwaters in the area today. Click on the TVA links below to see the generation schedules for your favorite trout tailwater. Maybe you can find a window of opportunity.
I checked the flows again, on the freestone streams in and around the Smoky Mountains. There has been very little change in water levels so far. It looks like Tellico River peaked and is receding for now. Maybe the flows will be good today. We will know soon.
I am busy receiving, packaging and displaying fly tying materials and tools. The fly tying department is very well stocked, with more to come, in anticipation for the upcoming Fly Tyers Weekend.
I ordered three more Renzetti Traveler fly tying vises yesterday. The Renzetti Traveler is supposed to be the best selling fly tying vise in the world. It is our best selling vise by far. They start at $174.95 for the base model. You can see our selection of Renzetti fly tying tools, on our online store by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
