Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:27 am, the temperature outside is 39.6 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy and warmer today, with a high in the low 60’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the mid-60’s. Lows at night will be in the low 40’s both days. Rain is back in the forecast Thursday with temperatures dropping into the 30’s Thursday night. There is a slight chance for snow showers Friday morning. It won’t stick down here.
Little River is flowing at 178 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 48.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 290 cfs or 1.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 188 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 430 cfs, 1.83 feet, compared to median flow of 242 cfs. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 128 cfs, 1.11 feet, compared to median flow of 83 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 81.2 cfs, 2.49 feet, which compares to median flow of 51 cfs. The water temperature is 45.0 degrees this morning.
Fishing conditions have improved. Stream flows are what most anglers would consider to be excellent. Water temperatures are chilly in the high elevations, and warming to the trout’s preferred temperature range in the low elevations.
Today should be overcast, which is very beneficial to fishermen.
These conditions will improve further tomorrow.
Brown trout are staging to spawn and in a few cases, there are redds visible in the streams. Care should be taken to avoid wading through a redd, which would damage eggs.
Nymphs will probably be your best fly choices. You may see some surface activity at times. I would be prepared with blue wing olive dries and emergers or midges.
You are going to catch leaves that have fallen into the water. There is no getting around that. This is Fall fishing and that is what we expect, though it can be frustrating at times.
Some trout tailwaters are fishing well in the region, if you can time a good generation schedule on your favorite tailwaters. Check with TVA from the links below to see if you can work with their schedules.
I am on a tear this week, ordering fly tying materials and tools to replace what was sold last weekend. We had a lot of fly anglers in town for Fly Tyers Weekend. Many of them were fly tyers. The fly tying department did as much business last weekend, as it does during some months.
I increased the inventory level on our best sellers in anticipation for the event. For instance, I normally stock two Renzetti Traveler C2003 vises. Last week I had three in stock. We sold two.
I hate being out of stock on anything. That department is my “baby”. That is why I order every week, so you will be happy with the selection and keep coming back. I hate it when customers are disappointed. That is usually obvious when you go upstairs to the department.
That is not obvious right now.
I got some good news yesterday. Tremont lodge booked more than enough rooms during Fly Tyers Weekend for our attendees and tyers, to qualify us for “no charge” on the conference center. Evidently, many rooms were booked late, just before the event. I thought I owed them $2,000. That was a pleasant surprise.
We have the lodge conference center reserved for next year’s Fly Tyers Weekend. In fact, we booked it almost a year ago. I will be meeting with Kaylan, who handles sales for the lodge next week. At that time, we will decided on the dates for FTW 2022.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
