Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:16 am, the temperature outside is 37.6 degrees.
Rain fell yesterday with totals reaching .61” at the Knoxville Airport and .76” in Townsend.
The rain has passed and there is none predicted until Monday night. It will be sunny and chilly through the weekend with highs in the 40’s today, mid-50’s Saturday and the low 60’s Sunday. Lows will dip to the upper 20’s tonight, mid 30’s Saturday and the upper 30’s Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 239 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.06 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 144 cfs. The water temperature is 52.2 degrees this morning and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 310 cfs, 1.70 feet, compared to median flow of 180 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 441 cfs, 1.85 feet, which compares to median flow of 234 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 50.0 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 169 cfs, 1.28 feet, compared to median flow of 95 cfs. The river continues to rise slowly.
Cataloochee Creek is receding and flowing at 83.2 cfs, 2.50 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 50 cfs. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees.
Stream flows are very good. Water temperatures are fairly warm in the low to mid elevations. Fishing should be good today. I expect water temperatures to fall today and through the weekend. At some point, that may affect fishing negatively. As water temperatures fall into the 40’s, overall fishing usually declines. At 40 degrees, fishing is usually slow.
Brown trout will remain active in the colder water because they are spawning or preparing to spawn.
I would use nymphs, weighted and fished near the stream bottom. There is a chance you may see surface activity if blue wing olives or midges are active on the surface. Be prepared for that.
There are a couple of tailwaters with predicted angler friendly generation schedules today. Click on the links below taking you to the TVA website to see if your favorite tailwater is fishable for you.
I have ordered from almost every fly tying supplier this week, to get the department back to full stock. We did as much business in that department last weekend, as we normally do in some months, due to the Fly Tyers Weekend event. We will be back at full stock in a week or less.
It is interesting to see what fly tyers bought. That has always been interesting to me. I spend way more time on that department than any others I maintain. The fly tying department is labor intensive, due to the huge number of items and colors. And, I package all of the spooled items, including fly tying thread. We sell a lot of thread. The department is a challenge I enjoy very much.
The new Fishpond 2020 gear will be arriving any day. I’m looking forward to that. We saw the samples about two months ago and we are anxiously waiting for their arrival. You will be impressed.
We are stocking the new Sage Trout LL fly rods and they are going to be very popular. Many of us remember the old LL rods from Sage. These are similar, but made with the newer Konnetic Technology materials. These rods are extremely light with a moderate action that is perfect for dry fly fishing on trout streams and rivers. The Trout LL rods are also very accurate, thanks to the Konnetic Technology. You can read more on our online store by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
