Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 31.3 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the mid 50’s. Tomorrow and Veterans Day will be warmer, with highs in the low to mid 60’s. Lows at night will dip to the mid 30’s tonight and low 40’s Sunday night. Temperatures will plunge Tuesday with a high around 40 degrees during the day and in the teens at night. Light snow is possible Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.82 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature is currently 46 degrees and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 391 cfs, 1.85 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 186 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 347 cfs, 1.67 feet, compared to median flow of 225 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 117 cfs, 1.06 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 91 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 64.7 cfs, 2.40 feet, compared to median flow of 48 cfs. The water temperature is 40.64 degrees.
Stream flows are great. Water temperatures are chilly in the low elevations and cold in the higher reaches of the streams.
As usual, I am writing this report early. The stream temperatures are falling and they will for a few hours. For that reason, I would not hurry to go fishing in the Smokies today. Wait a while, for the temps to bottom out and begin rising after the sun warms the streams. I would not expect to see the temperatures rise quickly today. We will see more improvement tomorrow and Monday.
I am still calling for good fishing today and I hope I am correct. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. If the water temperature falls into the low 40’s, fishing will slow. When it hits 40 degrees, fishing will be slow for sure. I am counting on water temperatures rising later today. I hope so.
I would plan on using nymphs, with plenty of weight, fished near the bottom of the stream. There is a chance you may see some surface action, but I don’t think that is likely. A blue wing olive hatch might entice trout to feed on the surface. Blue wing olives prefer nasty overcast days to become active. This will not be one of those, but nothing in fly fishing is absolute.
A trout tailwater might be a good option today. Look at the TVA website from the links below to see if you can find an angler friendly generation schedule. I saw a couple this morning on their site.
Once again, for the second time, Big Meadow Campground in Townsend won the National Park of the Year Award for a campground under 100 sites. The award was given to the Johnson family by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. Everyone I have talked to over the years, praises the Johnsons for running an excellent campground. Important to their success, from what I have heard, is cleanliness, they are organized, and their service is top notch. The Johnsons are very nice people who deserve this award again.

There are other exceptional campgrounds in our town. I know most of the campground owners and operators. They take “customer service” seriously. The successful operators put a lot of effort in the appearance of their properties. And, they are placed in a beautiful setting, next to Little River, one of the most beautiful rivers I have seen in my life.
I have seen and fly fished in a lot of rivers. I can’t think of one that is any prettier than ours.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
