Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:20 am, the temperature outside is 19.6 degrees.
It will be sunny and chilly today with a high temperature in the low to mid-40’s. It will be cold tonight with a low dipping to the low 20’s. It will warm some through the week and weekend with highs in the 50’s and lows in the 20’s through the period. No rain or snow is predicted through Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.74 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 141 cfs. The water temperature is 41.5 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are cold and still getting colder this morning. You will find water temperature readings in the 30’s in the higher elevations and maybe in the low elevations later this morning.
When water temps reach the low 40’s or colder, fishing is usually slow. That will be the case today.
If you decide to go, use heavily weighted nymphs fished near the bottom, where the trout are hunkered down.
The tailwaters are probably warmer, and you might find a favorable generation schedule on some. Check the TVA website from the links below to see which rivers are fishable today.
What we have today is fly tying weather.
We are holding a beginner fly tying class Saturday. The class is full with 8 students. We also have an intermediate trout tying class scheduled for Saturday December 14th. There are openings in that class. Call the shop at 865-448-9459 to enroll.
There will be more tying classes scheduled in January and February. We also hold Free Tying Demonstrations every Saturday during those two months. All you have to do is show up and many people do. We usually have two fly tyers demonstrating at different locations in the shop simultaneously. There are chairs for you to sit in and enjoy the day. These demonstrations begin at 10 am and last until 2:00 pm.
That will give you something t look forward to if you live nearby.
Today, I hope to get phase one of the Fishpond website work done. Tomorrow, I will start receiving fly tying orders in the computer system and displaying the materials and tools in the department. I hope to finish that Saturday, then start on phase two of the Fishpond website work which will take about a week. The new Fishpond 2020 merchandise will be arriving sometime this month. I can’t wait.
We sold a lot of tying materials and tools during Fly Tyers Weekend. I placed orders to re-stock and they have been arriving this week. There are more to come today and tomorrow.
The fly tying department will be very busy through the end of the year and into the first few months of next year. I re-stock every week. That is a time consuming job but it’s worth it. Fly tyers travel long distances to shop at our store. That is my favorite department in the store and it always has been.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
