Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:10 am, the temperature outside is 45.5 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the mid-50’s, dropping to the low 40’s tonight. No rain is predicted today. Warmer air with showers will move into the area tomorrow. Expect a high in the mid-60’s with a low tomorrow night in the mid 40’s. Rain will continue tomorrow night and Tuesday.
This has been a very wet year. Rainfall at the Knoxville Airport is reported to be 16.47 inches above normal this year. Actually last year was wetter. Late December 2018 brought flooding to the area and the average rainfall for the year was a record in the Tennessee Valley.
Little River is flowing at 474 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.59 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 253 cfs. The river is receding. The water temperature is 47.5 degrees this morning. We will see that number move upward over the next few days.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,010 cfs, 2.77 feet, compared to median flow of 330 cfs for this date. The river is receding.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 987 cfs, 2.59 feet, compared to median flow of 423 cfs. The river is receding. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 378 cfs, 1.78 feet, compared to median flow of 193 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 228 cfs, 3.05 feet, which compares to median flow of 84 cfs. The water temperature is 43.0 degrees this morning.
So, the rivers are flowing higher than normal. Many streams are fishable but care should be taken while wading. Some streams remain swift. Little River is receding rather quickly. You will find it to be fishable, though higher than some anglers prefer.
Water temperatures are pretty good, especially in the lower elevations.
I would plan on using nymphs or streamers fished weighted and deep. My nymph choices are always Tellico, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear and Prince patterns. Other reasonable Smokies nymph patterns will work and some may work better.
TVA and the Corps continue to generate around the clock at our area dams. Tailwater fishing opportunities are slim to none.
It appears we will have a pleasant day to visit the Smokies and fishing should be at least fair.
Get out and go if you can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
