Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:50 am, the temperature outside is 63.1 degrees.
It will be warm today with a high temperature in the mid to upper 60’s. It is going to be breezy. Showers and thunderstorms return tonight through tomorrow bringing up to one inch of rain to the Smokies. A cold front will move in tomorrow morning. Expect snow showers in the highest elevations.
Little River is flowing at 421 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.49 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 263 cfs. The water temperature is 48.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 785 cfs, 2.48 feet, compared to median flow of 314 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 828 cfs, 2.41 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 451 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 331 cfs, 1.66 feet, compared to median flow of 194 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 205 cfs, 2.98 feet, which compares to media flow of 86 cfs. The water temperature is 44.2 degrees this morning.
Fishing is fair in the mountains. Will fished yesterday and I overheard him talking to one of the guys in the shop. He said he caught only one trout. Will usually does much better than that.
The only problems I see today are the possibility for wind and in some streams, much higher than normal flows. We should see water temps rise today. I would fish the lowest elevations where the water is warmer. The three prongs of Little River look like good choices today. The water is swift but certainly fishable, but be careful wading.
Nymphs and streamers will work best. The streams are flowing high so add weight to get your flies down. There is a chance for a blue wing olive hatch today.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers continue their around the clock generation and in some cases sluicing at our area dams.
Fishing in the lowland rivers where trout are stocked may be a good option today.
It looks like we are going to have cold, seasonal temperatures again this week, starting tomorrow night. Water temperatures will fall and fishing will slow for a few days. Christmas week will be warmer and hopefully fishing will improve.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
