Yesterday morning at this time the temperature was 65.5 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 40’s. The low tonight is predicted to be 23 degrees. There will be a gradual warming trend through the balance of the week, with no rain expected.
US highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is currently closed due to ice and snow. The Cades Cove Loop Road is closed today through tomorrow for tree work.
Little River is flowing at 1,120 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.46 feet on the gauge and falling. This is a record for the date, last set in 1993 at 1,070 cfs. Median flow for this date is 260 cfs. The water temperature is 46.9 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,000 cfs, 3.68 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 370 cfs.

Most streams in the Smokies are flowing too high to safely wade. Water temperatures are falling. Stream conditions in the Smokies are not good for fly fishing. Water levels will fall over the next few days. If you go today, be careful. The streams are swift and the water is cold.
The lowland rivers are flowing very high. I saw Little River in town a few times yesterday. We’ve got a lot of water flowing through.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating around the clock at the dams nearby. TVA is sluicing in addition to generating at Cherokee Dam. They are still spilling and generating at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky.
There will be lots of visitors in town during Christmas week. It is going to be very warm. There is a chance fishing will be fair to good next week, if the water warms enough. We will enjoy highs in the 60’s and lows in the 40’s starting Monday. Bring your fly rods and waders.
