Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:22 am, the temperature outside is 24.3 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature of 50 degrees, dropping to the low 30’s tonight. Saturday, through Christmas will trend warmer. Expect highs in the 50’s tomorrow and Sunday with lows around 40 degrees. Rain enters the forecast Saturday night through Monday. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be very warm, with highs in the mid 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 507 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.71 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 220 cfs. The water temperature is 42.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 865 cfs, 2.59 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 366 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,010 cfs, 2.62 feet, which compares to median flow of 404 cfs. The water temperature is 40.6 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 464 cfs, 1.98 feet, compared to median flow of 173 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 279 cfs, 3.16 feet, compared to median flow of 80 cfs. The water temperature is 39.4 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies are receding but they are still flowing much higher than normal. If you go, be careful wading. Water temperatures are falling now.
Fishing conditions over the next few days will improve. Rainfall Sunday is not expected to be heavy. Water temperatures will rise over the next few days. I am hoping for fair to good fishing through next week.
Nymphs and streamers will probably work best. I would use my favorites, Tellico, Hare’s Ear, Prince or Pheasant Tail patterns. You may have your favorites that work as well or better. A very good streamer choice is any sculpin pattern. A Muddler Minnow comes to mind.
Be on the lookout for a blue wing olive hatch or other aquatic insects. As the water warms over the next few days, we could see some surface action.
Fishing will improve in the trout stocked lowland rivers through next week, unless we get too much rain, which does not look to be likely right now.
Most of the trout tailwaters in the region will be flowing high today, too high for wade fishing for sure. You may find some tailwaters that are fishable by checking the TVA website from the links below. Depending on where you live, you may have to travel. I didn’t check them all.
Daniel will be meeting with our Simms Sales Representative today, to see the company’s offering for Fall of 2020.
I will spend the day working on orders for merchandise to be delivered next Spring.
Our store is stocked well. We did not reduce our inventory in anticipation for the slow Winter months this year. There will be many last minute Christmas shoppers in the store this weekend. A lot of customers will be buying gift cards.
The fly tying department is heavily stocked. This is fly tying season. Yesterday, I displayed new colors of Veevus 14/0 thread, for those who tie midges. Veevus 14/0 is great thread for tying tiny flies. The fly tying department has been our fastest growing department this year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
