Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 45 degrees.
Christmas Eve in Townsend with a high temperature of 65 degrees? That is correct. Christmas Day will be almost exactly the same. In fact, warm days and nights will extend through the week. And, it will be dry until Saturday night. Expect low temperature this week in the upper 30’s to the mid 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 442 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.59 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 278 cfs. The water temperature is 50 degrees this morning. A gauge reading on Little River of 2.5 feet is on the high side of good. Right now, it is close.
Little Pigeon River is flowing higher, 1,610 cfs, 3.37 feet, compared to median flow of 424 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 889 cfs, 2.48 feet, compared to median flow of 498 cfs. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 508 cfs, 2.08 feet, compared to median flow of 229 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 344 cfs, 3.34 feet, which compares to median flow for this date of 102 cfs. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees.
Fishing will be fair today and maybe good in some watersheds. Little River is in good shape right now from a flow and temperature perspective. Some anglers like to fish when water levels are this high. Others do not.
Little Pigeon River is flowing high this morning. All streams in the Smokies will all recede as the week progresses.
The streams will warm further too. We will see water temperatures rise all week, into the trout’s preferred range, especially in the low elevations.
This week’s weather around the Smoky Mountains is a gift. Thank you.
I would plan on using nymphs or streamers this week. My favorite nymph patterns are Tellico, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear and Prince. For a streamer, I would start with a Muddler Minnow. Most reasonable nymph and streamer patterns will work.
You may see surface feeding at times. Blue Wing Olives, midges, tiny black stoneflies and other aquatic insects may be active this week. These are good Winter patterns. It is Winter, though it won’t feel like it to us or the trout.
I was hoping to see angler friendly flows for wading anglers on the area tailwaters but today is not the day. Maybe tomorrow will be. If you are fishing from a boat, you might find some opportunities. Check the TVA website from the links below.
We will be open today from 9 am until noon. We will be closed tomorrow, Christmas Day. I will not be writing a fishing report tomorrow.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
