Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:11 am, the temperature outside is 53.6 degrees.
The high temperature yesterday at the Knoxville Airport was 78 degrees. Of course that was a record last set in 1954 at 71 degrees.
A very strong storm moved through the area overnight. I did not hear much rain, only strong winds. Our power went out at 1:30 am and was restored a few minutes ago. I was waiting for daybreak to drive to the store and write this report. I am writing it at home now.
Today will be sunny with a high in the mid-50’s, dropping to the mid-30’s tonight. It may be windy today. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high temperature in the mid to upper 40’s.
The Little River USGS gauge near Townsend stopped reporting data yesterday. I will e-mail the USGS field office in Knoxville today to let them know.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 588 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.18 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 489 cfs.
Oconaluftee River was rising earlier, but it has crested. Flow is 828 cfs, 2.41 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 541 cfs. The water temperature is 54 degrees.
Tellico River rose quickly overnight but it has crested. Flow is 709 cfs, 2.52 feet, compared to median flow of 278 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 187 cfs, 2.87 feet, compared to median flow of 109 cfs. The water temperature is 52.5 degrees this morning.
I don’t know exactly what to say about fishing in the Smokies today. Some streams in the mountains were affected by rain last night, and others were not. I have no idea what Little River looks like. Water temperatures are good. Fishing may be good today depending on where you go. My guess is, most streams are OK. It may be windy. Try nymphs or streamers.
US Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg to Cherokee is temporarily closed due to downed trees.
TVA is generating pretty much constantly, trying to lower the lakes due to the expected heavy rain later this week. I did not see any local tailwater wade fishing opportunities this morning.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
