Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature outside is 48.0 degrees.
Heavy rain fell yesterday and last night totaling 1.57 inches in Townsend and 1.56 inches at the Knoxville Airport.
More rain is predicted today, mainly after 5 pm. The high temperature today will be near 60 degrees. It will rain through tonight and tomorrow morning. We may get an additional inch of rain. We are currently under a flood watch.
Little River Road from Metcalf Bottoms to the Townsend “Y” is closed due to downed trees. Us 441 (Newfound Gap Road) between Gatlinburg and Cherokee is closed due to high winds. Hopefully both roads will open later today.

Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,750 cfs or 4.18 feet on the gauge. That compares to median flow of 524 cfs.

Check the TVA website from the links below. Some tailwaters may be fishable today in our area. Heavy rain has fallen and more is expected. I was surprised when I saw the generation schedules this morning. Check yourself before you go.
Laurel Creek Road from near the Townsend “Y” to Cades Cove will be closed Monday so repairs can be made to the Bote Mountain Tunnel. The road was originally planned to close today but it appears the actual date has been moved if the reporting I read this morning is correct. The closure is expected to last two months. This is the only route to Cades Cove. You can read more on the Daily Times website by CLICKING HERE.
It is unclear what happens to problem bears that have been moved away from where they are captured. Many are moved to the Cherokee National Forest from this area near the Park. A $400,000 grant, will allow these bears to be tracked using GPS collars. The study will also track bears that have been relocated from near Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. You can read more about this on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Walter Babb and Brian Courtney will be holding a fly tying demonstration at the shop tomorrow, Saturday January 4th, between 10 am and 2 pm. This event is free. All you have to do is show up. They will be stationed at two different locations in the shop and tying simultaneously.
You do not have to tie flies to learn from these guys. They will be talking about fly fishing and tying. This is our first Free Fly Tying Demo this year. You can learn more by CLICKING HERE. You should try to attend this event if you can. It is going to be a good one.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
