Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:18 am, the temperature outside is 56.1 degrees.
Rain is likely again today with new precipitation amounts up to a quarter of an inch is possible. Temperatures will fall into the low 40’s by this afternoon. It may be breezy today. Temperatures will drop to the low 30’s tonight. There is a low chance for rain and snow before midnight. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 722 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.04 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 330 cfs. The water temperature is 52.9 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,740 cfs or 3.48 feet at the Sevierville gauge, compared to median flow of 519 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,750 cfs, 3.32 feet, compared to median flow of 557 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
Tellico River is flowing at 806 cfs, 2.73 feet, compared to median flow of 280 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 344 cfs, 3.34 feet, compared to median flow of 121 cfs. The water temperature is 48.9 degrees.
Streams are flowing high this morning again. Some streams or areas in streams are unsafe to wade. Water temperatures will be falling today and tonight. It will be windy at times in the mountains. These are not ideal fishing conditions in the Smokies.
If you go, look for a stream that is safe to wade and fish. Nymphs or streamers will probably work best. You may find blue wing olives on the water and it is possible trout will be feeding on the adults or emergers. Be prepared for that.
Most if not all lowland rivers will be flowing high today and difficult to fish with fly fishing gear. Water temperatures are warm this morning in those rivers. If you go, nymphs and streamers will work best.
Check the TVA website from the links below. There are going to be breaks in the generation schedules today at some dams and a few of our area tailwaters may be fishable.
I checked the long term weather forecast for our area. It will be fairly cold over the next two nights but warmer than normal. After that, we can expect much warmer than normal temperatures through January 18th. If this forecast holds true, there will be many days with highs in the 50’s and 60’s with lows in the 30’s to 50’s. This Winter is starting out much warmer than normal. Fishing may be good at times during this period.
Walter Babb and Brian Courtney will be conducting FREE fly tying demonstrations at the shop today between 10 am and 2 pm. These guys are experts. Both teach our fly tying classes. They will be tying at different locations in the shop so you can move from one to the other at any time. This is going to be a good day to hang around at Little River Outfitters.
You do not have to be a fly tyer to learn from Brian and Walter. They will be talking about fishing too. They are fun to be with and you will learn much about tying and fly fishing while you are here.
