Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:17 am, the temperature outside is 28.0 degrees.
Today will be warm again with a high in the upper 50’s, falling tonight to the mid-40’s. Friday will be warmer, in the low 60’s, dipping to the mid 50’s at night. We have a chance for showers Friday night. Saturday will be warmer, with a high around 70 degrees. Expect showers Saturday and Saturday night with strong winds. Sunday will be clear and warm.
Little River is flowing at 437 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.58 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 288 cfs. The water temperature is 43.7 degrees.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing much higher than normal for this date. They are slowly receding and that will continue through at least tomorrow. Some area streams are swift. Be careful wading. The streams will be warming and trout will become more active over the next few days.
I would plan on using nymphs or streamers. I would also fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. You may see aquatic insects on the water this weekend, with trout feeding on them. Blue wing alive hatches are possible.
The rain, wind and storms predicted for Saturday could negatively impact our fishing, especially later Saturday and possibly Sunday, if we get heavy rain which is expected.
If the storm weakens before reaching the Smokies, fishing could be good this weekend.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will enjoy much warmer than normal temperatures through January 23rd.
We can expect heavy generation today at the area dams. TVA is sluicing at some dams in addition to generating. And, they and the Corps are spilling at others. This will not be a good tailwater fishing day in our area.
I am hoping for good fishing for you this weekend, at least in the freestone rivers and hopefully in the tailwaters too. It is going to feel like Spring this weekend.
Yesterday, I left the shop to go to the bank. I saw a swarm of some sort of tiny terrestrial insects near my truck. If I were on the water, I would have called them midges. I don’t know what they were but I do know, that was an odd thing to see in January.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
