Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:01 am, the temperature outside is 69.8 degrees.
Strong wind arrived in Townsend at 1:44 am. Gusts up to 16 miles per hour have been recorded. We have had no rain so far during the past 24 hours.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the mid-70’s. We will be under a wind advisory today. There is a slight chance for rain today.
The WBIR website states: “A high wind warning is in effect through 1 am Sunday for the foothills and Smokies. Gusts over 80 miles per hour are possible. Avoid going into the Smokies if possible.”
Expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm tonight and a low temperature in the upper 40’s. It will be windy, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the low to mid 60’s and calm wind.
“US Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg to Cherokee is temporarily closed due to high wind warning.”
I don’t think there is any doubt, the wind will be stronger in the Smokies, compared to wind in the valley, which is not unusual.
Little River is flowing at 368 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.44 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 308 cfs. The water temperature is 50.9 degrees this morning.
Fishing is good in the Smokies. Water temperatures are warming and the trout are active. I overheard a customer tell one of the guys in the shop he saw trout rising to insects on the surface yesterday. The fish were probably feeding on blue wing olives or other aquatic insects.
Personally, I would wait until tomorrow to go fishing in the mountains. The wind warnings today are kind of scary. I don’t want to be in the forest with the strong winds blowing that are predicted. I will be working at the shop today so I don’t have to make that decision.
There is a chance some streams may be flowing higher tomorrow and possibly stained. I think the chances are better, they will be fine. The wind won’t be a problem tomorrow. The water will be warm. Trout will be active. Nymphs and streamers will work. Dry flies may produce as well.
The trout tailwaters in our area will be flowing extremely high today.
There is absolutely no way I would take our boat to a lake today. Twenty mile per hour winds are strong enough to keep me off the water. Tomorrow will be better.
I hate writing a fishing report, knowing fishing is good, but telling you not to go fishing today. Sometimes that is what I have to do, to be ethical and honest.
Steve Brown and Tom Brown will be conducting Free Fly Tying Demonstrations in the shop today. All you have to do is show up. They will be demonstrating between 10 am and 2 pm.
We are also holding a Beginner Fly Tying Class today. I think we will be busy at the shop.
I will be receiving fly tying materials and tools all day. Our fly tying department has been the best performing department in the shop this year, so far. I ordered from five of our tying department suppliers last Sunday. Four of the five got the shipments to me this week. I started receiving all the stuff yesterday.
Receiving an order from Wapsi, our largest fly tying supplier, takes one day this time of the year. There are so many items to receive into inventory. And, I have to package all of the spooled materials, thread and tinsels. I’ll be doing that again today. Tomorrow, I will re-order and the weekly cycle begins once more.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
