Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:32 am, the temperature outside is 56.1 degrees.
Light rain fell overnight. I just heard thunder.
It will be warm today with a high temperature in the upper 60’s. Rain is predicted today, tomorrow and tomorrow night. Thunderstorms are possible during the period. We will get a short rainfall break Thursday with cooler temperatures arriving. Rain is expected Friday and Saturday.
The Townsend USGS gauge is transmitting data again. I called and left a message at the USGS Field Office in Knoxville yesterday morning, to remind the folks there that the gauge was not working. This also happened a few weeks ago.
Little River is flowing at 617 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.89 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 295 cfs. The water temperature is 53.6 degrees this morning and rising.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,100 cfs, 2.87 feet, compared to median flow of 551 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,160 cfs, 2.77 feet, which compares to median flow of 525 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 50.7 degrees and rising.
Tellico River is flowing at 565 cfs, 2.21 feet, compared to median flow of 279 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 297 cfs, 3.21 feet, compared to median flow of 122 cfs. The water temperature is 50.0 degrees.
All streams in the Park that have USGS gauges are beginning to rise slowly. Flows are already high. Water temperatures are excellent. Trout are actively feeding. There is a chance the rivers and creeks could rise to very high levels over the next few days.
A strong line of storms just moved into the Townsend area and it is heading toward Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Heavy rain is falling. I hear thunder. It is very windy.
I am at home writing this report and the power just went out for a few seconds. Of course, I had to re-boot my computer.
Frankly, I think we are going to see higher water today. I hate to say it. I don’t think it will be a good fishing day in the Smokies.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating, sluicing and in some cases spilling at the many dams nearby. This is not going to be a good tailwater fishing day around here today.
I am going to upload this report now before the power goes out again.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
