Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:14 am, the temperature outside is 56.1 degrees.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms moved into the foothills and the Smokies early yesterday morning. Rainfall amounts totaled .94 inches at the Knoxville Airport and 1.71 inches in Townsend.
It will be warm today, in the upper 60’s. There is a high chance for more rain and thunderstorms today and tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and much cooler with a high in the low 50’s, falling to the low 30’s tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 1,110 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.51 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 284 cfs. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,590 cfs, 4.07 feet, compared to median flow of 521 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,430 cfs, 3.03 feet, which compares to median flow of 580 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 51.4 degrees this morning.
Tellico River is flowing at 1,030 cfs, 3.23 feet, compared to median flow of 275 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 322 cfs or 3.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 119 cfs. The water temperature is 50 degrees.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing much higher than normal. The streams are swift. Be careful wading. The water is warm today so trout will be active, especially in the lower elevations.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing very high. You might find some spots or smaller streams to fish today. However, more rain is predicted.
Nymphs or streamers will work best for you. Add plenty of weight to get them down.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams in the Tennessee River watershed today. Additionally, they are sluicing and spilling at many dams. This is not a good tailwater fishing day in our area.
Cooler air will move into our area tomorrow. The long term weather forecast indicates temperatures will be much colder by the weekend with highs in the 30’s and 40’s, and lows in the 20’s Sunday through next Tuesday.
Plan on spending part of your day Saturday at the shop. Tic Smith and Joe Lock will be conducting Free Fly Tying Demonstrations between 10 am and 2 pm. Neither of these guys have demonstrated at the shop before. Tic is a professional fly fishing guide with 25 years on the job, and most of his time spent floating clients down the Hiwassee River. Joe lives in Townsend and has been tying and fly fishing most of his life.
All you have to do is show up. This will be a fun and informative day for you.
I am spending the week organizing the fly tying department by taking inventory and adjusting the desired inventory levels upward in our computer system. Fly tying materials and tools were one of the fastest growing departments in our store last year. The department grew by almost 25%. That was the second best year ever in 25 years.
Due to that growth, I will need to keep more of the best sellers in stock this year. By setting the desired levels higher, the automatic ordering system will know to stock more.
