Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:38 am, the temperature outside is 31.3 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s falling into the 30’s again tonight. Rain is likely tomorrow and tomorrow night. Expect a high tomorrow in the low 50’s and a low in the low 30’s. Sunday and Monday will be mostly sunny and colder.
Little River is flowing at 617 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.89 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 253 cfs. The water temperature is 48 degrees this morning and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,200 cfs, 2.98 feet, compared to median flow of 435 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,090 cfs, 2.70 feet, which compares to median flow of 512 cfs. The water temperature is 44.8 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 628 cfs or 2.35 feet at the Tellico Plains gauge. Median flow for this date is 260 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 262 cfs, 3.11 feet, compared to median flow of 114 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees and falling.
Streams are flowing higher than normal. Some are swift. If you go, be careful wading. They will continue to recede today, though that is happening slowly. We may get another quarter of an inch of rain tomorrow.
Water temperatures are falling quickly. The temps will level off and maybe rise some today. Cold air Sunday and Monday will lower the water temps.
If you go today, nymphs and streamers will probably work best. Add plenty of weight to get them down. I would wait until later today to go, after the water temperatures have leveled off. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Flows in the Smokies today are not ideal for most anglers.
I do not see any good tailwater fishing opportunities today in our area. TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating heavily, while sluicing and even spilling at some dams.
Tomorrow will be a good day to visit the shop and enjoy our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations. Tic Smith and Joe Lock will be tying from 10 am until 2 pm. They are both very nice guys with plenty of fly fishing and fly tying experience. Tic has been guiding clients for 25 years on our local tailwaters. He is also a FFF Certified Casting Instructor. Joe lives in Townsend and has been fly fishing most of his life. All you have to do is show up. We will be waiting for you.
I am looking at thousands of items we stock in the fly tying department, and setting desired inventory levels for each one, using sales data to make those decisions. I hope to finish that job tomorrow. That sounds boring and monotonous but it has to be done. I don’t mind at all. The outcome will make your shopping experience much better and reduce the chance we will run out of items.
Though I order weekly for that department, I was surprised at the popularity of some of the materials we sell. The tying department grew by 25% last year.
We fired up a new Point of Sale and Inventory Control System January 2nd, 2019. I love it! Because it operates on “The Cloud”, I can access it and work from anywhere there is an internet connection. Today and tomorrow I will be working on this project from home, where there are no interruptions. This job is going much quicker than I expected.
After finishing this, I will take an inventory count of every item in the tying department Monday and Tuesday. That is done using a laptop and a bar code scanner. Then, automatic ordering can be done with confidence that the merchandise will be ordered correctly, and reflect the new inventory levels I set.
Daniel and the staff are doing the same thing for all the other departments.
This is something we will do once a year, using data collected from the prior year to make inventory stocking decisions.
There are a lot of small items for sale in a fly shop, especially in the fly tying department.
