Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:17 am, the temperature outside is 16.2 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high around 47 degrees dipping to the mid 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s. Rain will move into the region Thursday night and remaining through Friday.
At Mount LeConte, the high today is predicted to be 37 degrees with a low tonight of 24 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 401 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.51 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 285 cfs. The water temperature is 37.0 degrees this morning and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 736 cfs or 2.41 feet at the Sevierville gauge. Median flow for this date is 499 cfs.
At Birdtown, Oconaluftee River is flowing at 862 cfs, 2.45 feet, compared to median flow of 541 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 36.3 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 460 cfs or 1.97 feet at the Tellico Plains gauge. Median flow for this date is 297 cfs.

Many streams in the Smokies have receded to a fishable level. The problem we have today is the water temperature, which is currently in the 30’s at all stream with USGS gauges reporting and those temperatures are still falling. At some point later today, we should see the water temps level off and possibly rise some. I don’t think they will rise enough to improve the fishing.
If you go, fishing with heavily weighted nymphs are probably your only choice. Trout are lethargic when the water is this cold. They do not need food and they are not searching for food.
My advice is, don’t get too far from your truck or fishing car today. What if you fell in and got wet? I would also have a change of dry clothes in your vehicle, just in case.
In our area, I do not see any angler friendly flows on the tailwaters. You might check the dams in upper East Tennessee to see if you can work with some generation schedules there.
It seems this will be another good fly tying day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
