Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:14 am, the temperature outside is 52.5 degrees.
Rain has moved into the Smoky Mountains. Rainfall amounts today are predicted to be between a quarter and a half of an inch. It will be windy today. The area is under a high wind warning.
US Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is closed due to high winds.
Tonight will be colder with a low in the mid 30’s. Tomorrow will be chilly. Expect a high temperature in the low 40’s dipping to the low 30’s tomorrow night. Sunday will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 359 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.42 feet on the flow gauge and rising. Median flow for this date is 318 cfs. The water temperature is 45.5 degrees and rising.
Other streams in the Park are rising and the water temperatures are warmer.
Fishing may be fair in the Smokies this morning. Rainfall may cause the streams to rise further today.
The high wind warning is troubling to me. One forecast I read this morning warns of wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. Personally, that would be enough to keep me out of the Park today. If that really occurs, limbs and trees will fall. More roads may close temporarily.
I don’t see any tailwater fishing opportunities nearby today. TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating at all the dams I checked this morning.
Will Davis and Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating their fly tying skills tomorrow between 10 am and 2 pm. This event is free. These guys are both excellent fly tyers and fly fishermen. Even if you do not tie flies, you can learn from them. They will be discussing fly fishing and tying. All you have to do is show up. You can learn more about Will and Jimmy by CLICKING HERE.
I found an interesting article about the repair work being done on the Bote Mountain Tunnel. CLICK HERE to read the article on the Daily Times website. Click through the 7 photographs. The tunnel is about 80 years old.
Bote Mountain Tunnel is located on Laurel Creek Road, the only route to Cades Cove. The road, tunnel and Cades Cove are closed to traffic until the end of February.
Be careful not to access the wrong website if you are buying a Tennessee hunting and fishing license on the internet. There is a scam site online that will ask you for personal information, though it does not ask for payment of a license. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is trying to have the site taken down. You can read a story on the Daily Times website by CLICKING HERE.
I searched “Tennessee fishing license” on the web and saw more than one that looked suspicious.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
