Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:11 am, the temperature outside is 33.4 degrees.
Up to a quarter inch of rain was predicted yesterday. We got more that that. The Knoxville Airport reported .30 inches while in Townsend, we received .41 inches.
Snow fell in the higher elevations yesterday. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is still closed due to snow and ice.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature near 50 degrees in the foothills, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be about the same as today with a chance for rain in the afternoon and evening. Thursday will be partly sunny and a little warmer.
Little River is flowing at 513 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.72 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 301 cfs. The water temperature is 45.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing higher this morning than it was yesterday at this time. Flow is currently 978 cfs, 2.73 feet, compared to median flow of 565 cfs.
Less rain fell in the Oconaluftee River watershed yesterday. This morning, flow is 788 cfs, 2.36 feet, compared to median flow of 524 cfs. The water temperature is 42.3 degrees at the Birdtown gauge.
Tellico River is flowing at 513 cfs, 2.09 feet, compared to median flow of 282 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 187 cfs, 2.87 feet, compared to median flow of 119 cfs. The water temperature is 39.9 degrees.
The streams are swift in some areas. Be careful wading. I would stand in safe spots and high stick nymph rigs. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing may be fair where and when the water is warmer.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers have reduced the flows at some dams. Check the TVA website to see where you can travel to and fish today. There are not many options. Look at the schedules in upper East Tennessee.
Spring shipments are beginning to arrive at the shop. I saw one Fishpond order yesterday, that was delivered by UPS. The stacked boxes were several feet long and about up to my chest. Most Spring orders are scheduled to arrive between now and later in February.
Then, we will wait for the Spring hatches to begin. When that happens, business will be good again.
My knees are sore this morning. I am taking inventory in the fly tying department. I think that will take about three more days. The job is done using a barcode scanner hooked up to a laptop computer. The data is stored on the cloud. I’m doing a lot of stooping and reaching to accomplish this task. Fly shop work is not always fun. I did get to stop and talk to customers, which is fun.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
