Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 60.8 degrees.
Rainfall yesterday and last night was much more than predicted. We have had 4.75 inches of rain in Townsend during the past 24 hours. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches are possible today with another half inch possible tonight.
We are under a flash flood warning today.
I have been awake and listening to thunder since 3:00 am.
According to the USGS website, flood stage at the Little River gauge is 8 feet. Currently, the river level there is 7.48 feet. Little River is rising.
Schools in our county (Blount) and Loudon County are closed due to flooding concerns.
Little River is flowing at 5,880 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 7.48 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 360 cfs. Flow today is a record for the date, last set in 2010 at 1,760 cfs. The highest recorded flow on Little River at Townsend was 15.75 feet in 1994. Little River has exceeded the level we have now three times since the 1994 flood.
Little River at the Maryville gauge is flowing at 11,500 cfs or 16.3 feet on the gauge. The river has risen to over the National Weather Service Action Stage.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 15,300 cfs or 9.58 feet at the Sevierville gauge. That is a record for this date, last set in 1958 at 4,090 cfs. The river is rising.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 6,130 cfs or 6.42 feet at the Birdtown gauge. Median flow for this date is 619 cfs. Flow at this point is a record for this date, last set in 1955 at 3,470 cfs.
At the Tellico Plains gauge, Tellico River is flowing at 2,430 cfs, 5.96 feet, compared to median flow of 313 cfs. The record flow on this date was last set in 1958 at 2,370 cfs. Tellico River is rising.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 1,150 cfs, 4.78 feet, compared to median flow of 135 cfs. The record flow for this date was last set in 1943 at 908 cfs.
At this point, no roads in the Park have been closed due to flooding. That may change.
It is windy right now. Power outages are possible today in the area.
