Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a cold morning here at the edge of the Smokies. The temperature right now is a chilly 34F. It isn't supposed to get much warmer today with a high of 45. Spring is back tomorrow with sunshine.
River levels are better but still too high to fish. This morning the Little River gauge is reading 3.92 feet or 1,410 c.f.s. The daily normal is 306 c.f.s. Needless to say we don't recommend you going fishing today.
There are still road closures in the Smokies. US 441 Newfound Gap Road is listed as closed due to high water. Little River Road is closed from Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Campground. That means to get to Elkmont you need to go to Gatlinburg and in from the Sugarlands side. Upper Tremont Road (the gravel section) is closed also. Laurel Creek Road and Cades Cove are still closed because of tunnel repairs.
The Clinch is running 2 generators all day long. The Holston is generating AND sluicing. South Holston Dam says it is sluicing 200 c.f.s. and no generators. The Hiwassee is generating 2 generators all day. The Watauga is spilling minimum flows and then is going to start generating.
It doesn't look like there is much fishing to be done anywhere in East Tennessee today.
Bill Boyd Jr and Bill Boyd Sr aka the Dubbing Teasers are here today for our Free Saturday Fly Tying Demo. They will be tying until 2pm. Come by and learn some great new techniques and here some fun fishing stories.
New items are showing up at the Shop each day. We are getting ready for Spring fishing which is right around the corner. The new Korkers Terror Ridge boots are on the way. These are a higher end lace up Korkers. We also got our first order from Simms. There is a lot of new hats and t-shirts. One of my favorite items that came is a closed-toe felt soled wading sandal.
Have you gotten your flies organized and ready for Spring? With as much warm weather we have had it won't be long before the first Spring hatches start. These are the big Quill Gorden mayflies and the tiny Blue Quills. Quill Gordons hatch beneath the surface and swim through the water as adults before emerging in the the waterless world above. Classic wet fly patterns work perfect for this. If you find a Quill Gordon hatch, using a Quill Gordon wet fly can be very effective.
Blue Quills are tiny gray mayflies. They hatch around the same time as the Quill Gordon. If the trout aren't taking your big flies you might want to tie on a #16 or #18 Blue Quill dry.
I better get this uploaded and head downstairs to learn some fly tying. Have a great day and thank you for reading the Fishing Report.
