Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:42 am, the temperature outside is 55.4 degrees.
The important weather story now is the anticipated rain, today through Thursday morning. A half inch to three quarters of an inch is predicted today. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch are possible tonight. Up to three quarters of an inch are possible Tuesday. Heavy rain is possible Wednesday night accompanied by high winds, before ending later Thursday.
We are under a flood watch through Tuesday night.
Unlike last week, there will be breaks in the rain according to one weather report I read this morning so this week may not be as bad. The National Weather Service warns that rainfall amounts this week could amount to between 3 and 6 inches. I hope that doesn’t happen.
As a precautionary measure, schools in Knox, Blount and other counties are closed today in anticipation for flooding.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing high already due to the heavy rain we got last week.
Last Thursday, Little River rose to 11.3 feet. Flood stage is 8 feet or 7 feet according to the USGS web page for Little River in Townsend. Those numbers are stated differently on that page. Highway 321 in Townsend and Walland was closed temporarily due to high water on the road last Thursday.
There is a link to stream flow charts on the USGS Little River Townsend page. Look for “Peak Chart” and click on the arrow. There you can view a graphic, showing the current river level, and five more of the highest readings at the Townsend Gauge. You will see today, last Thursday and four other significant flood events. The highest reading on the chart is 15.75 feet, recorded during the 1994 flood.
Our store may be closed at some point temporarily this week due to flooding and closed roads. Check this report for more information later. It will be updated often this week if needed.
Little River Road between Elkmont and the Townsend “Y” is temporarily closed due to downed trees.
I would advise you to avoid entering the Park through Thursday due to the possibility of flash flooding, downed trees and closed roads.
As expected, TVA, Corps of Engineers and Brookfield are generating at all tributary dams in the region today. In some cases they are also sluicing or spilling. They are spilling huge amounts of water at the dams on the Tennessee River.
I can’t think of any fly fishing opportunities available today.
Jon Oody and Matt Dixon will be holding free fly tying demonstrations at the shop Saturday, February 15th, between 10 am and 2 pm. All you have to do is show up. This will be a very interesting day, from both a fly tying and a fly fishing perspective. You can learn more about Jon and Matt by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
