Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:55 am, the temperature outside is 21.7 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 50’s falling to the low to mid-30’s tonight. Sunday will be slightly warmer and partly sunny. Following another sunny day Monday, rain will move into the region at night, and continue through Tuesday night.
Little River is flowing at 1,270 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.73 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. Temperature readings are not available at the Townsend gauge site due to equipment problems, probably caused by the flood.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,530 cfs, 4.03 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 645 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 2,550 cfs, 3.96 feet, compared to median flow of 559 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 1,320 cfs, 3.91 feet, which compares to median flow of 332 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 635 cfs, 3.98 feet, compared to median flow of 133 cfs for this date.
As you can see, the streams in the Smokies are still flowing high this morning. They are receding but at a slower rate (inches or feet per day) than they have been during the past few days. That is normal after a high water event. We consider a gauge reading of 2.5 feet at the Townsend gauge on Little River to be on the high side of good.
The rivers are swift and tough to fish right now. If you go, be careful wading.
TVA and the Corps plan to generate all day at the tributary dams in our area. In some cases they are sluicing or spilling. I did not see any tailwater fly fishing opportunities at our tailwaters today. Maybe I missed something, so check the TVA website from the links below.
Everyone is anticipating better fishing conditions. Maybe it won’t be long.
Visit our store today between 10 am and 2 pm to watch and talk to Jon Oody and Matt Dixon. They will be conducting free fly tying demonstrations. All you have to do is show up. You will learn tying and fly fishing techniques for big fish from these guys. You can read more about them by CLICKING HERE. This will be a fun and interesting day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
