Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:02 am, the temperature outside is 47.3 degrees.
It will be warm today with a high temperature in the mid-60’s. Rain is back in the forecast today and tonight. Rainfall amounts between .75 to 1.25 inches are expected. Temperatures will fall into the low 40’s tonight. Tomorrow’s high will be around 50 degrees with rain tapering off after 10 am.
Little River is flowing at 502 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.70 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 341 cfs. Though the USGS gauge site is not reporting water temperature due to an equipment malfunction, the temperature is likely around 50 degrees, based on the reading at the Oconaluftee River gauge.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,080 cfs, 2.85 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 797 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,340 cfs, 2.95 feet, which compares to median flow of 610 cfs. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees this morning.
Tellico River is flowing at 754 cfs, 2.61 feet, compared to median flow of 371 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 314 cfs, 3.28 feet, compared to median flow of 145 cfs. The water temperature is 45.5 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies are flowing much higher than normal, while other are not. Little River is flowing close to what we consider the high side of good which is 2.5 feet on the gauge.
Rainfall today and tonight, depending on how much we get, may temporarily raise the water levels.
I would go early and fish Little River. The water is swift in some areas so be careful wading. Start with nymph rigs but be on the lookout for aquatic insect activity on the surface. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Trout should be actively feeding due to the fairly warm water temperatures.
TVA and the Corps are pushing a lot of water through the tributary dams, to lower the water levels in the impoundments. They are generating and sluicing around the clock. They are also spilling at some dams. I did not see any fishing opportunities on our trout tailwaters today.
John Chambers will be conducting a free fly tying demonstration at the shop Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. Daniel told me John will be joined by the owner of Syndicate Fly Rods. These guys are experts at Euro Nymphing. They teach Euro Nymphing Classes at our school. Daniel will be updating their biographies on our “Fly Tying Events” page this week and describe what you can expect Saturday. If you are interested in learning more about this very effective fly fishing technique, you should be here. All you have to do is show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
