Rain and snow showers are likely tomorrow, becoming all rain by 10 am. Snow is possible Thursday night. Little River is flowing at 567 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.81 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 328 cfs. The water temperature is 50.4 degrees this morning. The water temperature issue was repaired by the USGS Knoxville Field Office. The Townsend gauge is now reporting water temperatures.
Little Pigeon River is rising temporarily. Flow is 1,470 cfs, 6.24 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 740 cfs at the Sevierville gauge.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,330 cfs, 2.94 feet, which compares to median flow of 595 cfs at the Birdtown gauge. The river is receding. The water temperature is 49.6 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 930 cfs, 3.00 feet, compared to median flow of 404 cfs. The river is receding at the Tellico Plains gauge.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 295 cfs, 3.23 feet, compared to median flow of 140 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 47.5 degrees.
The streams are flowing higher than most anglers prefer but you can fish some of them. Some are swift so be careful wading. Water temperatures are fairly warm in the low elevations today.
I would start with nymph rigs early in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. You may see some hatches. I got an e-mail from guide David Knapp. He took a client to the Elkmont area and did fairly well Monday. He said there were a few rising trout. They saw midges on the surface early, then a few quill gordons, blue quills, small black caddis and black and brown stoneflies later in the day. His client caught fish almost everywhere they stopped, with some being caught on midges. You can visit David’s website by CLICKING HERE.
TVA and the Corps are generating around the clock, as well as sluicing and even spilling at some tributary dams. I did not see any tailwater fishing opportunities today on the TVA website.
I read an article and watched video on the WBIR website this morning, describing the lake conditions. Due to the heavy rain this Winter, the lakes are high and choked with debris. Large logs, boat docks and other navigation hazards are present. TWRA is warning boaters not to be on the water at night. You can read the article and watch the report by CLICKING HERE.
John Chambers will be conducting a free fly tying demonstration at the shop Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. Daniel told me John will be joined by the owner of Syndicate Fly Rods. These guys are experts at Euro Nymphing. They teach Euro Nymphing Classes at our school. Daniel will be updating their biographies on our “Events” page this week and describe what you can expect Saturday. If you are interested in learning more about this very effective fly fishing technique, you should be here. All you have to do is show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
