Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:23 am, the temperature outside is 48.2 degrees.
It will be fairly warm today, in the mid-50’s with showers moving in this afternoon. Today will be breezy. It will be cold tonight, in the mid-20’s with rain and light snow showers. Tomorrow will be sunny and cool, in the low 40’s falling to the 20’s again tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 421 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.52 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 315 cfs. The water temperature is 49.3 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,180 cfs, 2.96 feet, compared to median flow of 604 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,010 cfs, 2.61 feet, which compares to median flow of 622 cfs. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees this morning.
Tellico River is flowing at 578 cfs, 2.24 feet, compared to median flow of 328 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 227 cfs, 3.03 feet, compared to median flow of 134 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Water temperatures are pretty good in the low elevations this morning. Flows in some streams are much higher than normal but others are not. Little River is flowing on the high side of good. Wind may be an issue today. Take a rain jacket if you go too.
Nymph rigs will work. There is a chance you will encounter adult aquatic insects on the water. And, there is a chance trout will be feeding on them.
Choose a low elevation stream to fish and Little River is a good option.
I do not see good fishing opportunities on the tailwaters again today. The goal to lower the lake levels continues with generation, sluicing and even spilling at some dams. I did notice a break in the generation at South Holston Dam for a while today, but they are sluicing.
Lake levels are falling and in most cases they are much lower than they were last year at this time.
Spring-like temperatures will return next week. That gives me hope.
