Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:29 am, the temperature outside is 36.9 degrees.
Snow showers will change to rain later today, with a high temperature around 40 degrees. Little or no accumulation is expected. Snow showers are likely tonight with the temperature dipping to the upper 20’s. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible. Tomorrow will be sunny, with a high in the low 40’s, falling to the mid to upper 20’s Saturday night. Sunday will be warmer, in the upper 50’s with sunshine.
Heavier snow is predicted in the mountains, possibly up to 6 to 11 inches of new snow by tomorrow evening. Up to 7 inches of snow fell at Mount LeConte night before last.
Little River is flowing at 354 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.38 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 339 cfs. The water temperature is 40.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies continue to recede. They are flowing higher than normal. You may find swift water in some streams. Be careful wading. Little River is flowing on the high side of good.
Water temperatures are chilly in the low elevations and cold in the higher reaches. The water temperatures are falling. We will not see the water warm much until Sunday. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing will improve when the water warms.
I would plan on using nymph rigs.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating around the clock, sluicing and in some cases spilling at the tributary dams in an effort to lower the lake levels. I did not see any good fishing opportunities on the trout tailwaters today. Though the lake levels are higher than the agencies prefer, in most cases they are much lower than they were last year at this time.
If this trend continues, we will be fishing on the tailwaters earlier this year, compared to last year. I hope that is the case.
