Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is shining this morning which makes it feel nicer out than the thermometer says.
Water temperatures on the Little River are cold but they have been consistent over the past days. This morning the temperature is 40.1 F. I would give the streams some time to start warming and fish the middle part of the day.
Water levels on the Little River are good. The gauge is giving a reading of 2.31 feet or 323 c.f.s. This is a very workable level. You will find some areas that feel deep and fast so as always be careful while wading.
Nymphs are still the best choice in the mountains. Especially early in the day keep adding split shot till you get down to the bottom. Try a large heavy nymph like a Prince, Double Tungsten Stonefly or a Pat's Rubberleg. Below it trail a smaller nymph like a pheasant tail or even a Squirmy Worm.
We have been starting to see some mayfly hatches. I wouldn't be out on the river this time of year without Quill Gordons in the #10 - #12 size and Blue Quills in the #16 - #20 size. You never know when you will find a pool with bugs hatching and trout relishing in the joy of eating on the surface.
Laurel Creek Road to Cades Cove re-opened today. National Park Service has been doing repairs on the tunnel. I wouldn't go anywhere near Cades Cove this weekend. Every body in East Tennessee is probably headed there to the first to drive the Loop. Give is a week and things will be back to normal.
Abrams Creek is many people's favorite winter fishing location. The upper stretch of it is a little warmer than other streams and can offer good fishing. Traffic is also usually lighter this time of year making the drive around the Loop more pleasant. I would give it a few days to let the traffic settle.
Today is another FREE Saturday Fly Tying Demo. Clayton Gist and Dave and Melissa Harrell are downstairs right now getting set up to do some tying and talking. If you are coming up to the mountains to fish today swing in and watch some tying while you wait for the water to warm.
Our last free fly tying demonstration this Winter will be held Saturday March 7th. The featured fly tyers for the day are Jack Gregory and Walter Babb.
