Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:18 am, the temperature outside is 65.1 degrees.
Rainfall yesterday amounted to .60 inches at the Knoxville Airport and .30 inches in Townsend.
Thunderstorms and wind moved into the area last night. So far, very little rain has fallen at our house. Wind gusts overnight reached 14 miles per hour.
It will be warm today, in the mid-60’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly before 4 pm. Rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch are possible. Some storms could produce damaging winds. The rain will end tonight, then return Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 401 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.48 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 323 cfs. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Park rose slightly yesterday. Flows are very good for fishing right now. Water temperatures are rising, which is improving fishing.
We will have to see what happens today. Heavy rain could raise the water levels. Wind will likely be an issue at times today.
Roads that are normally open this time of the year, are open. Some roads could close today temporarily due to downed trees. Cades Cove is now open after two months being closed due to repairs made to the Bote Mountain Tunnel.
Fishing has been fair to good at times lately. When the water warms, fishing improves. When the water temperatures fall, fishing slows. That is what we have been dealing with, which is typical in late February and early March. Anglers have enjoyed hatches at times and catching trout on dry flies.
Guide David Knapp sent out a newsletter e-mail yesterday and as usual, it was well written and accurately descriptive of recent fishing conditions. Read it by CLICKING HERE. It’s a good one!
TVA and the Corps are generating, sluicing and even spilling at some dams today. I did see breaks or reductions in the generation schedules at Cherokee, Wilbur and South Holston Dams. I have not seen that in a while. Hopefully this is a sign of better tailwater fishing conditions in our near future. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater. Maybe you can work with the flows on some rivers today.
A weather alert just popped up on my computer. A line of strong thunderstorms is being tracked through the area. Heavy rain, lightning, strong winds and pea size hail will be possible in these storms. The advisory is in effect until 6:45 am this morning. The time right now is 6:24 am.
I am looking at the weather radar. The storm appears to be moving barely to our north. Knox, Sevier, Cocke and Counties to their north are getting the worst of the storm right now.
Guess what? Right now, it looks like we are going to have a beautiful weekend. After Thursday, there is only a slight chance for rain through next Monday. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and warm. It will be chilly Friday and Saturday night. I bet fishing will be good in the Smokies. I am hoping we do not get too much rain today.
Jack Gregory and Walter Babb will be tying at the shop Saturday from 10 am until 2 pm. Their presentations are free. All you have to do is show up. This is our last Winter Free Fly Tying Demonstration. It is going to be a good one. These guys are expert fly fishermen and fly tyers.
I am looking forward to this coming weekend for many reasons. The weather will be great. We will be busy at the shop. Jack and Walter will be there Saturday.
Last Saturday, our fly tying department sales were equal to one good week, in one day. I am ordering like crazy to re-stock.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
