Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:31 am, the temperature outside is 36.1 degrees.
No rain this weekend! It will be sunny today and tomorrow. The high temperature today will be around 50 degrees falling to the low 30’s tonight. Sunday will sunny and warmer, with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the upper 30’s at night. Monday will be partly sunny and warm with a high in the mid-60’s.
Little River is flowing at 431 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 389 cfs. The water temperature is 42.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies have receded to near normal flows. Little River is flowing on the high side of good. The water levels will continue to recede over the next three days.
Water temperatures are chilly this morning. The sun and warmer air will begin raising the temps beginning today and that trend will continue through next week. It is going to feel like Spring has finally arrived, through March 21st, according to the long term forecast.
Fishing is going to get better every day in the Smokies. Though rain is expected next week, there has been no mention of significant precipitation through the period.
I would fish in the lower elevations today, where the water is warmer. Trout may be somewhat inactive until the water warms.
Nymphs will probably work best early. As the water warms over the next few days, you will see aquatic adult insect activity. What you see could be just about any early Spring hatch, depending on the elevation you are fishing. I think fishing will be better tomorrow, than it will be today but I could be wrong. The only way to find out is “Go”.
TVA and the Corps are still flushing water through most of the dams in our area. There are some breaks in the schedules today, in upper East Tennessee. Check out those schedules from the links below. Lake levels are receding. We are all looking forward to better trout tailwater fishing conditions and hopefully, that will be soon.
Come to the shop today to see fly tying demonstrations conducted by Walter Babb and Jack Gregory between 10 am and 2 pm. This is an opportunity for you to learn from two experts. Both of these guys have been fishing the mountains for decades. This is our last Free Saturday Fly Tying Demonstration Event for the Winter. You don’t want to miss this one.
I got an e-mail from Matt Kulp yesterday concerning the closed Tremont Road. Matt runs the fisheries department at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The gravel portion of the road washed out in several spots during the February flood. Matt told me the Park is planning to repair the road with their own crews, instead of hiring outside contractors and the work has begun. They are bringing in gravel this week for the repairs. Though there is no definite re-opening date, the road should open soon, maybe in two or three weeks. This is great news.
I read an interesting story on the Daily Times website. You can read it by CLICKING HERE.
The Park Service is considering closing the Cades Cove Loop Road to vehicles on Wednesdays, all day long. This would give pedestrians and those riding bicycles use of the road without vehicle traffic, for a full day each week from May through September.
Park officials are asking for public comment. You can respond in writing as there is no planned public meeting on the subject.
Well, Spring fishing has finally arrived. We are all happy about that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
