Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:07 am, the temperature outside is 56.1 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature near 70 degrees. We have a very low chance for rain today. Showers are likely tomorrow with a slight chance for thunderstorms. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low 70’s tomorrow. It will continue to be warm through the weekend. Rain is in the forecast for Friday through Sunday. I see no mention of significant rainfall through the period.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.24 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 360 cfs. The water temperature is 51.4 degrees.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing at a desirable fishing level. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the lower elevations. It will be overcast through the weekend. Fishing conditions are excellent.
Most anglers are catching trout. Nymphs are working best though that could change at any time. Be prepared for heightened adult aquatic insect activity. It is a good idea to have a size range of dark mayfly imitations. Adams or Parachute Adams dries are a good choice. A selection of Elk Hair Caddis should be in your box. The usual nymphs will work. I would certainly have some Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Tellico, Prince and other nymphs in my box.
What is driving the trout’s activity is warmer water. The water will be warmer in the lower elevations and that is where I would fish.
This is a very good week to be fishing in the Smokies.
I do not see any good trout tailwater fishing opportunities today. TVA and the Corps of Engineers are still lowering the lakes.
Management at Great Smoky Mountains National Park seem to be leaning toward changing the car-free times at Cades Cove this year as a trial. Currently, the Cove is closed to motorists on Saturday and Wednesday mornings from May through September. On those days, traffic and parking problems exist. Cyclists and hikers arrive early to enjoy the loop road without traffic, overwhelming the available parking spaces. Those who intend to use vehicles, arrive early too, sometimes backing up in line for miles.
The Park is proposing a pilot program, to eliminate the Saturday car-less mornings, while closing the loop road to motorists all day on Wednesdays. That would give cyclists and hikers all day to use the loop road without traffic.
You can read a very good article explaining this proposal on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
We are very busy at the shop. Fishermen are taking advantage of the great fishing conditions in the mountains. We all hope the tailwater fishing will improve soon. The outlook this year looks much better than last year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
