Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:31 am, the temperature outside is 76.1 degrees.
We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms this morning, mainly before noon. Then, we will see gradual clearing. The high temperature today will be in the mid-70’s. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow, with a high of 70 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 525 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.71 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. The water temperature is 58.6 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are excellent. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed. I would go to one of the surrounding National Forests to fish. The streams are swift so be careful wading. You can stand in safe water and use nymph rigs, heavily weighted. That will work. Watch for surface activity and switch to dry flies if you think they will work for you. They might.
Trout will be actively feeding as the water temperatures in the lower elevations are within the trout’s preferred range.
An isolated thunderstorm could raise the water level and possibly stain the stream you are fishing. If that happens, move to another watershed and hopefully find fishable water.
The lowland rivers are flowing high. Wading options will be limited. Fish with nymphs and streamers for trout or smallmouth bass.
Lake fishing may be good this afternoon, after the threat of thunderstorms has past. We have a chance for severe weather this morning. You don’t want to be on a lake in your watercraft during a severe weather threat. I would use weighted streamers.
I did not check all generation schedules in our region but what I found is, most dams will be active today. I did notice a period at South Holston Dam early this morning, when the generators may be off. Check yourself from the links below to see if you can fish your favorite tailwater.
Fly fishermen are fishing. Customers were using our curbside service yesterday. There was a lot of traffic in Townsend. Our shipping department was active yesterday.
When I came home, a saw a big group of motorcycle riders, eating in the parking lot a Smokin Joes BBQ. It was good to see a busy restaurant in town.
Yesterday, I worked on organizing the new Fly Tying Department on our online store. I did add some hooks. I’m not really proud of the photography, but it will do for now. Just about everything we sell in the fly tying department is packaged in cellophane, which is tough to photograph because of the glare. I switched from three flash units, to one and used continuous lighting to help eliminate the glare. You can see what I mean by CLICKING HERE.
I am starting with hooks, then I’ll move on to beads. This is going to take a lot of time. I photographed and placed Renzetti vises and tools on the store over a year ago. You can see them by CLICKING HERE.
Uh oh, a strong thunderstorm just blew in at our house. I better get this report loaded before the power goes out.
