Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:24 am, the temperature outside is 58.8 degrees.
Strong thunderstorms blew through at our home beginning at 2 am. Rainfall amounted to .28 inches in Townsend. Weather radar indicates the storms have passed.
It will be cloudy today with gradual clearing later and a high temperature of 66 degrees. It will be breezy with wind gusts as high as 30 miles per hour. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low in the upper 30’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high temperature in the mid-50’s. Saturday will be sunny with a high in the upper 80’s. Showers are likely Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.21 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 382 cfs. The water temperature is 59.2 degrees. The river is slowly rising.
Other streams in the mountains are rising slowly but most have already peaked. It does not look like any streams will be significantly affected by the storms.
Nymphs and dry flies are working. We will see water temperature fall over the next couple of days.
Fishing will be good today in the mountains. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is temporarily closed until at least April 30th. If you are hoping to fish mountain trout streams, consider traveling to the Cherokee National Forest or other national forests.
You may find some lowland rivers temporarily stained this morning but they should clear fairly quickly. Lowland river fishing is good for trout, where they are stocked, smallmouth bass and other panfish. Nymphs and streamers are recommended.
Most TVA dams are generating today. There is a short break in the generation schedule this morning at Douglas Dam. Check the TVA schedules from the link below. I did not click on all of them in middle and east Tennessee.
The lakes are fishing well and a lot of anglers are out fishing on them. I have heard the ramps are crowded with people launching boats and kayaks to go fishing. Streamers are probably your best bet right now for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Large black and heavily weighted Wooly Buggers are an excellent choice this time of the year.
I am working diligently on the online store, building the new Fly Tying Department. You can see the progress by CLICKING HERE. The menu on the left will help you with your search.
I’m almost finished with beads. Many of the hooks have been added. I’ll finish those this week by adding Tiemco hooks. Renzetti vises and tools are now in the department. Next, I’ll add tying thread.
The pages will be prettier when I’m finished. Right now, I’m just trying to get as many items photographed and loaded as I can.
New photography lighting will arrive today from New York for use in our studio. I ordered the equipment specifically for photographing hair, piles of dubbing and other natural and synthetic materials. I hope it works like I think it will.
This project is going to take about two more months to complete. I hope it is sooner than later.
When everything improves, and the National Park opens again, we can only image how many people will be fishing. We are taking good care of customers now. Our mail order business and curb side pickup is keeping us open. The shop is actually performing better than I would have imagined three weeks ago. Thank you so much for your support.
With all of us still working, we are coming up with new ways to improve our shop for the near and distant future. Normally, we would not have time to do that in April.
Have a great day, stay safe and thank you for being here with us.
