Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:20 am, the temperature outside is 59.9 degrees.
Rain and thunderstorms were predicted yesterday but none developed in the Smokies. Showers are likely today again and thunderstorms are possible. There is a threat of scattered severe thunderstorms, with possible damaging wind and hail through the evening.
Scattered thunderstorms are also possible tomorrow and through the holiday weekend. The chance for rain is somewhat lower tomorrow through Monday. High temperatures today will be in the mid-70’s, and in the low to mid-80’s tomorrow through Monday.
Little River is flowing at 442 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.53 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 183 cfs. The water temperature is 56.3 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing above normal. Little River is flowing on the high side of good. You should be able to find fishable water in the mountains today, unless heavy rain changes the conditions. Some streams are swift, so be careful wading. Water temperatures are very good.
Fishing is good in many streams. Dry flies and nymphs will work. Dry fly choices should include Yellow Sally Stonefly, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Light Cahill, Sulphur and Yellow Stimulator patterns. Most reasonable nymphs will work, and Green or Pink Weenies should be in your box.
If you go today, be aware that severe thunderstorms are possible.
Some roads in the Park that have been closed will re-open Saturday, including Tremont Road and Upper Tremont Road. Opening Tremont Road is a big deal for anglers. That will give us access to upper Middle Prong of Little River, Lynn Camp Prong and Thunderhead Prong. There are many pull-offs on Tremont Road so parking in the area will improve. Other roads are opening Saturday. You can see the list on the Park’s website by CLICKING HERE. Scroll down to “Which Roads Will Open May 23rd” and open the window. Formerly open roads are also listed so it is a little confusing. Elkmont Road will remain closed.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Wading may be limited. Nymphs and streamers will work for trout and smallmouth bass. Poppers and foam floating flies may do well for smallmouth bass.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at many dams today. They will be spilling at Douglas and Wolf Creek Dams. There are breaks in the generation schedule at Center Hill Dam.
Fishing on the area lakes is risky today, due to the chance for thunderstorms with strong winds. If you go, stay close to the ramp in case you need to run from a storm and get your boat out of the water.
Fishing may be good today or it could be a wash out. Hopefully we will not get heavy rain and fishing will be good through the weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
