Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:08 am, the temperature outside is 66.5 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the mid-80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon. Expect the same tomorrow and Saturday. Sunday will be sunny and warm with no rain predicted.
Little River is flowing at 181 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 167 cfs. The water temperature is 63.7 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing slightly above normal. Stream flows are excellent for wading and fishing. Water temperatures are warming during the heat of the day in the lower elevations but they are fine for now.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. You dry fly selection should include yellow sally stonefly imitations. Good nymph choices include Pheasant Tail, Green Weenie, Pink Weenie and Squirmy Worm patterns. Many other dries and nymphs will work. Trout are looking for food. If your fly is presented well, you get a good drift and don’t spook the fish, you will do very well.
Lowland river fishing is good for smallmouth bass and other species. Streamers, nymphs and top water poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will work. I drove by Little River yesterday morning and it looked perfect.
TVA is generating at many dams today though I did notice there is a break in the schedules at Norris, Douglas and South Holston. There may be others. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their generation schedules. TVA is cutting back the flows on the tailwaters and that is excellent news.
Lake fishing is good. Bass and other species are taking nymphs, streamers and top water flies. Watch out for the expected afternoon thunderstorms.
We are busy at the shop. A lot of people are fishing. Americans want to be outdoors. Conventional fishing tackle is in short supply due to overwhelming demand. Even some fly fishing manufacturers are not completely fulfilling orders for fly shops, or they are slow to deliver.
We are getting a lot of fly tying materials in this week. These suppliers are not filling orders as quickly or completely as I am accustomed to. I will spend today and tomorrow receiving orders, then order again this weekend.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced they are going to close the Cades Cove Loop Road to motorized traffic on Wednesdays beginning June 17th. This pilot program will continue through September 30th. Bicyclists and pedestrians will have the entire 11-mile road to themselves, all day, every Wednesday during the period. You can read more on the Daily Times website by CLICKING HERE.
This is very important news for you. Abrams Creek is a long walk from where you will be parking. You could pack your gear on a bicycle to enhance your adventure. I don’t know for sure, but I bet electric bikes will be allowed. They have been in the past on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
I can only imagine how many people will not know, and drive to the Cove expecting to enjoy the scenery from their cars and trucks. I bet there will be a sign at the “Y” alerting those people to the new rules.
Saturdays will be open to motorized vehicles all day until the end of September and maybe after that date.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
