Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:12 am, the temperature outside is 68.0 degrees.
We got some rain yesterday, a little over one half of an inch at the airport and slightly less than a quarter of an inch at our house.
It will be hot and dry today, through at least Monday with high temperatures near 90 degrees each day.
Little River is flowing at 181 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 158 cfs. The water temperature is 64.2 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing above normal and many rose some yesterday due to the rain. They are all receding. Those that have USGS gauge sites appear to be at a very good fishable level.
One thing you may want to watch over the next few days is water temperature. It is going to be hot and dry. We will likely see water temperatures that are warm in the low elevations. Check the temperature with your thermometer at mid-day or later. If the number is near 70 degrees, move further upstream to higher elevations, where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Fishing is good.
Lowland river fishing is good for smallmouth bass and other species. You will probably do best going early or late when the sun is off the water if you are not fishing in a shaded area. Streamers, nymphs, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will work.
Angler friendly flows can be found on some of our tailwaters in the region today, depending on where and when you go fishing. Check the TVA website from the links below to see where and when you can go. Look at Norris Dam. There are opportunities there like we have not seen much of lately. That is good news.
The lakes are fishing well. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. There will be less recreation boaters on the lakes early. This time of the year, I would be at the ramp at daybreak and ready to go. Streamers, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies may all do well for you.
I found some really good news this morning. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is re-opening more roads, giving us access to much more streams to fish. Also, some campgrounds in the Park will open. This will be done in two phases beginning Monday followed by more openings on June 15th.
I am especially happy to hear Elkmont Road and the Elkmont Campground will open June 15th. You can read the news on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Fishing news is very good today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
