Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:16 am, the temperature outside is 66.7 degrees.
Today will be sunny and hot with a high temperature around 90 degrees. Tomorrow will be partly sunny and hot again, with a slight chance for rain. Showers and possibly thunderstorms are likely Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 158 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Though Little River is flowing slightly below normal today, most streams that have USGS gauge sites are still flowing above normal. Water temperatures are getting warm in the lowest elevations. Little River reached 70 degrees yesterday in Townsend. Later today, you may need to fish at a slightly higher elevation where the water is cooler. A few hundred feet in elevation does make a difference. It is best for the health of the trout that are caught and released, if you fish where the water temperature is in the 60’s or cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations are working well for your dry fly. Pheasant Tails, Weenies and Squirmy Worms are producing below the surface.
Fishing is good in the lowland rivers for smallmouth bass. Streamers and top water flies will produce for you.
There are breaks in the generation at some dams today, especially in the mornings. The Clinch River tailwater is a good choice and there are others. Check the schedules from the links below to see if you can work with them.
Lake fishing is good but I would go early today before the sun is on the water. As the sun rises, find shaded banks. Streamers, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will work for bass and sunfishes.
As you can see below, there will be more fishing access as some roads re-open today. Elkmont Road will re-open next Monday. A lot of anglers are waiting anxiously for that.
Paula told me there was a coyote howling outside our house this morning. I didn’t hear a thing.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
