Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:06 am, the temperature outside is 68.9 degrees.
Scattered showers moved through the area yesterday. The Knoxville Airport reported .58 inches of rain while in Townsend, near our home, only .14 inches was reported.
It will be sunny with no chance for rain today through Saturday. Highs will be in the low to mid-80’s, falling to the upper 50’s at night. Humidity will be lower.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 157 cfs. The water temperature is 69.4 degrees at the low elevation Townsend gauge.
Most streams in the Park that have USGS gauge sites are flowing above normal. Some stream levels rose yesterday due to the rain in those watersheds. Oconaluftee River is rising this morning. All streams are fishable.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. I would fish somewhat higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temps in the 60’s.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations are good choices for your dry fly. Try Green or Pink Weenies or Squirmy Worms for your sub-surface flies.
Lowland Rivers are fishing well for smallmouth bass. Streamers and top water flies will produce for you. Fish when and where the sun is off the water.
There are breaks in the generation at many dams in the region, offering tailwater fishing opportunities. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
The lakes are crowded with boaters and anglers but fishing is good. Streamers and top water flies are working. I would go early or late when the sun is off the water. There will also be less boaters to deal with if you go early. I would be at the ramp at daybreak.
We are busy at the shop and in our shipping department. A lot of people are fishing. We have many choices in the Tennessee Valley right now and anglers are taking advantage of the good fishing conditions. Fly fishing anglers are active everywhere. The mail orders verify that. Most of our mail order customers live in the East US with the majority living in the Southeast.
We are all looking forward to the opening of Elkmont on Monday. The road and campground are scheduled to re-open since being closed in March. That will lessen the fishing pressure on many streams in the area.
Cades Cove will be closed to vehicles next Wednesday as the road will be for pedestrian and bicycle use only. The road closure for vehicle traffic will continue each Wednesday through the end of September.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
