Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:04 am, the temperature outside is 55.4 degrees.
Today will be beautiful and comfortable again, with a high in the low to mid-80’s and no rain in the forecast. Tomorrow will offer us more of the same but we may see thunderstorms in the afternoon. Low temperatures at night will be in the 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 121 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 163 cfs. The water temperature is 64.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. June has been fairly dry so far. Normal for this month, on this date is 1.48 inches at the Knoxville Airport. This year, only a little over half of an inch has fallen at the Airport.
Fishing is good in the Park. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Good dry fly choices certainly include Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations. Yellow Neversink Caddis and Yellow Stimulators are good choices. There are many other dry flies that mimic the yellow stone well. Green Weenies, Pink Weenies and Squirmy Worms are popular flies bought by our customers right now for sub-surface offerings. More traditional nymph patterns such as Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear will work too. The trout are hungry and looking for food. Stealth is essential to your success. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more.
Lowland River fishing is fair to good depending on the water level where you intend to fish. Fish the shaded areas with streamers and top water flies for smallmouth bass.
There are breaks in the generation at every dam I checked this morning, including Cherokee, Douglas, Norris and South Holston dams. The water is even going to be off at Center Hill Dam at times today, finally. There is a fairly long break at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your day. The dams will be generating off and on today so be familiar with the schedule before going and plan accordingly.
Go early to fish the lakes while the sun is off the water. I would be at the ramp at daybreak. The lakes will be crowded with boaters later in the day. Streamers and top water flies will work.
I have had a tough time keeping fly tying materials in stock during the past couple of weeks. I order weekly, but the fulfillment time has been several days longer than usual. Some of our suppliers are having issues fulfilling orders quickly and completely. Some have had staff reductions that they had not planned for.
The big problem I am seeing now is with one of the shipping companies. What usually takes three days to arrive from Arkansas for instance, is now taking 5 to 6 days. I talked to a lady at one of our suppliers yesterday. For a while, I am going to have their orders shipped 2nd day air. That costs more but it will keep me on schedule for a 7-day ordering cycle. I think that will solve most of the problems.
I also raised the inventory level on some items, especially tungsten beads. I’ve got a ton of tungsten beads arriving Monday, with more coming later next week. Those beads should have arrived Thursday. I will get this fixed.
Other departments in the store are stocked much better.
Elkmont Road and Campground will re-open Monday. Both have been closed since March. That is going to give us access to a lot more prime trout water.
Enjoy this beautiful weekend and go fishing. You have many more choices now than you had before.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
