Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:04 am, the temperature outside is 54.3 degrees.
It will be cloudy and cool today with a high temperature in the low to mid-70’s and a chance for showers this afternoon. After another cool night, tomorrow will be slightly warmer with a greater chance for rain through the evening. Friday will be warmer with a good chance for showers.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 159 cfs. The water temperature is 60.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at or a little higher than normal this morning. Little River is an exception. Water temperatures are very cool, even in the lowest elevations. It should be mostly cloudy today which is a benefit to anglers. Overall, fishing conditions in the mountains are very good.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. A very good dry fly choice is a pattern that mimics the Yellow Sally Stonefly. Green Weenies, Pink Weenies and Squirmy Worms are good sub-surface choices along with more traditional nymph patterns.
Most lowland rivers in the area are flowing at normal, though Little River is flowing below normal. Nymphs, streamers, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will work for smallmouth bass in these rivers.
Check the TVA website and you will find several wade and boat fishing options on the area tailwaters today. Tailwater fishing is good for trout in the upper reaches and smallmouth bass further downstream.
This may be an awesome lake fishing day, especially due to the predicted cloud cover expected later. It is also going to be cool. Hit the banks with streamers or top water flies and poppers. Watch for surface action as schools of shad may be feeding on the surface anywhere on the lakes. The game fish may be feeding on the shad. The lakes may be crowded.
This will be the first planned day with no vehicles on the Cades Cove Loop Road. You can walk, run or ride a bicycle all day without encountering cars and trucks. This will continue each Wednesday through September.
I spent all day yesterday unpacking, scanning and displaying fly tying materials. I’ll do the same today. Then, I will re- order tomorrow. We are finally getting some backordered Tiemco hooks that have been out of stock from our supplier for several weeks. There are still more backordered. Our suppliers seem to be improving their fulfillment to dealers. They are operating these small distribution centers with less workers than before. Now that more people are fishing and less are tying flies, maybe they will get caught up soon.
This will be an excellent fishing day just about anywhere you plan to go. Take a rain jacket with you. It is going to be cool and maybe wet.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
