Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:09 am, the temperature outside is 59.0 degrees.
We have a slight chance for showers this morning then a chance for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. The high temperature today will be in the upper 70’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and through the night with a high temperature near 80 degrees. Rain is less likely Saturday and Sunday and it will be warmer.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 148 cfs. The water temperature is 59.7 degrees this morning.
Rivers and streams in the Smokies that have reporting USGS gauge sites are flowing at or slightly above normal with Little River being the exception.
Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range. It should be mostly cloudy today. That always helps the angler. Fishing is good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations and Green Weenies are what I would use.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good for smallmouth bass. Most of the rivers are flowing near normal. Streamers, nymphs, hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies will work.
There are several tailwater fishing opportunities in the area today, whether you are wading or boating. Trout fishing is good on the tailwaters from what I’m hearing. Smallmouth bass fishing is also good in the lower reaches of some tailwaters. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their generation schedules.
Lake fishing is good. Today should be overcast, which will extend your fishing day in shallow water. I would cast to the banks with poppers or foam floating flies. If that does not work, move to another area or switch to streamers.
This will be an excellent fishing day, with comfortable temperatures and overcast skies. Take a rain jacket with you.
The US Senate passed the Great American Outdoor Act which will now go to the House. One of the benefits of this bill would cut in half the National Park Service’s $12 billion deferred maintenance backlog. It will fund maintenance for National Forests and other public lands. The bill will permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
