Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:03 am, the temperature outside is 63.7 degrees.
A brief thunderstorm moved through Townsend yesterday afternoon and dropped .48 inches of rain. I watched the storm on radar as it moved into Sevier County, missing the upper Little River watershed.
It will be mostly sunny today and tomorrow with high temperatures in the mid to upper 80’s. We have a low chance for thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. The chance for rain increases Monday. Rain is likely Tuesday and Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.59 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 137 cfs. The water temperature is 62.9 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River, Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are all flowing above normal this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing well for this time of the year. I expect water temperatures to warm close to 70 degrees this weekend, in the lowest elevations. Fish a little higher where the water is cooler. Look for temps in the 60’s.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Stealth and presentation are essential to your success. If the trout don’t see you, you will catch more. Dress to blend with the forest and stay as low as possible. Fish the choppy water and deep runs.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good. It will be sunny this weekend. Go early or late when fishing will be better. On river that are canopied with trees, fish the shaded areas when the sun is higher. Nymphs, streamers and top water flies will work.
Once again there are several trout and smallmouth bass tailwater fishing opportunities today. Visit the TVA website to plan your day and go.
Lake fishing is good in shallow water, especially early and late when the sun is off the water. Swimming nymphs, streamers, hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies will work. I expect the lakes will be crowded today and tomorrow. I would be at the ramp at daybreak and plan to fish until late morning.
We are busy at the shop and in our shipping department. At least for now, a lot more people than usual are enjoying the great outdoors. Fishing is not the only popular activity. Hiking, boating, paddling, bicycling and photography are off the participation charts.
Gardening has become huge this year. Even I am participating in that activity, with fairly good success. I grew up on a farm but I forgot about all of the challenges like, too wet or too dry and critters eating your harvest. So far, our garden has been affected by moles, rabbits and deer.
I bought a bottle of fish fertilizer. That stuff stinks but it is supposed to work well for those intending to “garden organic”. That won’t work for us. Bears would be digging up our garden looking for the dead fish, no doubt about it.

The following roads and campgrounds will open Monday June 15th:
Elkmont Road
Elkmont Campground
The Cades Cove Loop Road will be closed every Wednesday beginning June 17th to vehicle traffic. The road will be open to pedestrians and bicyclists only. The Wednesday closing to vehicles will continue through September.
