Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 67.5 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today and cooler with a high temperature in the upper 70’s. Thunderstorms are likely, a 100% chance. They say we may get an inch. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow though the chance is lower.
Thunderstorms blew through yesterday, affecting most of the drainages in the Smoky Mountains. We got a little over a third of an inch in Townsend. Little River rose to 1.9 feet at the Townsend gauge and is now receding. Flow is currently 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 150 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River, Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are all flowing above normal today.
None of the streams with USGS gauges are blown out. Water levels are good. Fishing is good. This will be an excellent fishing day due to overcast skies. There is a chance you may encounter rising water and possibly stained water wherever you go in the mountains due to expected rain. There is also a chance you won’t.
Water temperatures will probably be fine at most elevations.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. I would use Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations for my dry fly and a Green Weenie fished below the surface.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good for smallmouth bass. Again, you may find stained water in some rivers at times, depending on where you are fishing. Go equipped with streamers, nymphs and top water flies. It will be overcast, which is a great benefit for anglers today.
Check out the generation schedules on your favorite tailwater and you will probably figure out a way to fish at most of them today. Be aware that unscheduled releases are possible on the Clinch River as they are working on transmission equipment until July 2nd.
This may be a good lake fishing day due to the overcast skies. On the other hand, you might get caught in a thunderstorm. I usually fish closer to the ramp when there is a high chance for thunderstorms. Streamers, swimming nymphs, hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies should work well today.
We have many fly fishing options today but don’t forget to take your rain gear.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
