Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:59 am, the temperature outside is 70.5 degrees.
Thunderstorms are passing over Townsend. We have had .82 inches of rainfall during the past hour. There is more to come. More showers and thunderstorms are likely this morning mainly before 8 am and again after 5 pm. The high temperature today will reach the low 80’s.
The long term forecast indicates a high chance for rain every day through July 12th. The dry spell has ended.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet at the Townsend flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 114 cfs. The water temperature is 66.7 degrees this morning. The river is receding.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 708 cfs, 2.40 feet and rising sharply. Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing above normal but they are not currently affected by rainfall.
If you go this morning, you may encounter rising and stained water in some or more prongs of Little Pigeon River and possibly others. Some drainages may not be affected by the rain. Check the flows in the Smokies before you go. It appears some rivers in the Park were missed by this storm which has just about passed.
Fishing may be good in the Smokies depending on where you go. Dry flies and nymphs are working.
Lowland river fishing may be good for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. Little Pigeon River is probably stained and it is rising quickly. Other lowland rivers may be OK today. Only time will tell.
The rain has stopped here at our house. I can’t hear thunder.
There are tailwater fishing opportunities today. There will be generation at some dams later today. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day. You may need to go early.
Lake fishing is good. It may be partly sunny later. Cloudy skies would be better. Be on the lookout for thunderstorms with strong wind. Top water flies are working when the sun is off the water. Streamers and swimming nymphs are good choices if poppers and foam floating flies are not working.
Rain and thunderstorms are going to be beneficial and at times a negative for anglers over the next few days. June has been dry. Rain has missed the Little River drainage recently and flows have been low. We could use some rain and we got plenty this morning. I checked the flow at the Townsend gauge again. Little River is now rising quickly.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
