Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:00 am, the temperature outside is 68.9 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms brought heavy rain to our area. Rainfall amounts for the past 24 hours were reported to be 2.22 inches at the Knoxville Airport and 1.33 inches in Townsend.
We have a fair chance for more rain today, mainly this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow. High temperatures both days will be in the low 80’s with lows at night in the 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 354 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.35 feet at the Townsend gauge. Median flow for this date is 110 cfs. The water temperature is 66.0 degrees this morning. Little River downstream at the Maryville gauge is flowing at 1,250 cfs which is a record for this date.
Little Pigeon River is flowing high at the Sevierville gauge. Flow is currently 2,220 cfs or 3.81 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 253 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 924 cfs, 2.43 feet, compared to median flow of 316 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 233 cfs, 1.43 feet, compared to median flow of 121 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 140 cfs, 2.76 feet, compared to median flow of 63 cfs.
Due to the scattered nature of the storms that passed through the area, some streams are flowing much higher than normal, than others. Little River is fishable in the Smokies, at 2.35 feet. Other streams are fine right now. There are some that may be blown out.
Nymphs will probably work best today. Use extra weight to get them down. Fishing is good in some drainages. You may enjoy Spring-like flows in some streams.
Lowland rivers are flowing high. Some will be stained, especially further downstream below where small silted tributaries flow in. That was the case yesterday in Little River. The water was clear upstream, and stained downstream.
You will have some tailwater fishing opportunities today, especially early. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their generation schedules. TVA may be testing the spillway and sluiceway at Douglas Dam today, so you may not be able to count on their generation schedule. They may also be unscheduled releases at Norris Dam due to transmission work going on through July 2nd.
Lake fishing may be fine and there are plenty around here to choose from. Some lakes or areas in the lakes could be stained.
I am having a hard time procuring fly tying materials but I’m working at it hard. For instance, I have placed three orders with Wapsi, June 18th, June 23rd and yesterday. The first two were supposed to have shipped yesterday but I did not get verification that they did. Other distributors are partially filling orders. One company took a week to process an order. Others are taking up to 10 days. Normal is a day or two.
When the computer tells me to order, I order. Then I wait.
Fly tying has been very popular this year. These companies are slammed with orders. Some of them are short-handed due to safety distancing. They can’t get the stuff packaged to sell to dealers. I talked to one lady yesterday who I work with on at least a weekly basis. She told me they are usually slow this time of the year and taking days off because there is nothing to do. Not this year!
When all of this stuff comes in, I am going to be slammed, getting everything received and out to sell. That may start today. I hope so.
