Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:58 am, the temperature outside is 66.7 degrees.
Today through Sunday will be warm, with high temperatures in the upper 80’s and lows in the high 60’s. We have a low chance for scattered thunderstorms today and tomorrow, with a greater chance Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.80 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 122 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS flow gauge sites are flowing above normal this morning.
Water temperatures will rise to 70 degrees or warmer in the low elevations this weekend. Fish in the slightly higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Fishing conditions are good. Fishing is good.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will work for you. Fish the shaded areas with top water flies. Go early or late for better fishing. Tubing activity will be very high this weekend.
There are many wade and boat fly fishing opportunities on the tailwaters today with a few exceptions. Check the TVA website from the links below to see the generation schedules and plan your day.
Lake fishing is good, early and late. Top water flies such as poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will work when the sun is off the water. Otherwise, use streamers and swimming nymphs. Go early, at daybreak. I would plan on pulling out at the ramp later in the mornings. The lakes will be very crowded this weekend.
You may find some solitude up the creeks, away from the main body of water in the lakes. You may find shade there too. I love exploring creeks where they enter lakes. Our boat does well in very shallow water and it has taken us up the creeks during the Summer many times, when the lakes are crowded.
The creeks are ideal places to spend your day in a canoe or kayak too. Those watercraft can go places most boats cant or most boaters won’t.
Paula and I love one creek in particular. It isn’t easy to get to even in our boat. We have to paddle over fallen trees where even a trolling motor can’t go. The reward is at the end, where the creek flows from the mountains into the lake. We can hear it at first. Then we see the water flowing in. I like to tie off the boat and walk to the freestone stream, then jump in the cold water on a hot Summer day. There are many little jewels out there to be found if you look for them.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
