Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature outside is 67.1 degrees.
It will be cool today, with a high in the low 80’s dropping to the mid-60’s tonight. There is a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow’s weather conditions will be similar to today. We have a chance for rain again Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 162 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.81 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 127 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees this morning at the low elevation USGS gauge site at Townsend.
All streams in the Park that have USGS gauges are flowing higher than normal.
Flows are very good for early August. We did not get the expected heavy rain yesterday. The water is warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal which is good. Some could be temporarily stained where tributaries from farms enter the rivers. Most rivers are receding. Tellico River is currently rising. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies should work. Try streamers or nymphs too. It will be sunny today so you may want to go early or late unless the river you are fishing is shaded.
You may want to fish a tailwater today. There are angler friendly flows at many this morning. TVA or the Corps will be generating at several dams this afternoon. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater today.
It will be mostly sunny today so plan your lake fishing early or late. Fish the banks with hair bugs, poppers or foam floating flies. If that is not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs to fish deeper. If you are fishing at midday, try to find shaded banks. Watch for thunderstorms.
Two orders of fly tying materials arrived from Wapsi yesterday. That will keep me busy for a couple of days. I still have one more order being filled there. I will place another in a day or so. That is usually done every four days. Another order arrived from Firehole. There are two orders waiting in line at Whiting Farms to be filled and shipped.
I have been measuring and drawing expansion plans for our fly tying department. Right now, the scaled drawing depicts the enlarged department with a total of 900 square feet and 121 linear feet of wall space. A large portion of the department does not have walls. It is open with a view of the street level of the shop. We will be taking part of one of our classrooms for the expansion, and moving offices and the photography studio. That will leave us with one classroom which is all we really need.
Our sales representative and the Umpqua sales manager will be at the shop next week for a meeting. I am looking forward to that. Josh, the sales manager is flying in from Colorado. Dave Choiuinard is our sales rep for Umpqua and other companies. He lives in Florida.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
